Historical Markers

The Darlington County Historical Commission was created by Act of the South Carolina General Assembly and has taken seriously its charge to mark historical sites within the county. Since the 1936 establishment of the South Carolina Historical Marker Program, the Commission has researched and marked 92 historic sites within Darlington County. The county has 561 square miles of land, calculated as a historical marker for every 6.03 square miles of land. We are ranked #4 in total markers erected and #1 based on per capita investment. We have an excellent track record of marking historic buildings, churches, organizations, and influential citizens. The County budgets for two historical markers per year as a capital expenditure.
