Tilden Lee Galloway
December 4, 1956 – June 30, 2024
For those of you who regularly interact with us at the Darlington County Historical Commission & Museum, you will instantly recognize the name Lee Galloway. Sadly, I must report that Lee passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2024. We ask that you remember his wife, Debbie, and their daughter, Julia, during this difficult time.
For those of you who had the pleasure of knowing Lee, you knew how dedicated he was to the causes he supported. He readily invested 100% of his time, talents, and energy in them. We are honored to have been one of those causes. For years, Lee has assisted us in indexing various collections. Single-handedly, he extracted and indexed all the Darlington County chattel mortgages that were previously unusable for research. After completing this massive undertaking, he focused on our military collection. His goal was to do a name index by collection, engagement, and year to assist researchers in connecting with their ancestral past. He came in as he had time, went upstairs into the archive, and diligently extracted documents. When we began working on the museum, he expanded his assistance to include helping research Civil War military history and the Darlington Guard.
Lee has been a valuable resource to the Historical Commission. His assistance in indexing and subject research is invaluable to staff and researchers. We are deeply grateful for his contributions and his willingness to roll his sleeves up and invest in even the most complex projects.
Lee was a dedicated volunteer here and found great joy in helping us preserve, protect, and promote our rich local history. His commitment went far beyond just his time. He willingly donated family treasures that also helped share our narrative, and currently, a plow that belonged to his grandfather is on display in the gallery.
Lee’s close involvement with the Darlington County Historical Commission & Museum staff and other volunteers created a situation where we saw him as family. His love and commitment to our purpose was evident. Join us as we honor Lee Galloway with a remembrance table in the museum lobby honoring his investment in helping preserve, protect, and promote Darlington County’s rich history. He and his contributions to preserving Darlington County’s historical narrative will always be remembered.
